My "Style"

When I learned to draw horses, I learned to draw them realistically, as I'm sure we all did. I practiced and practiced, trying to draw them as correctly as possible, over and over and over.

Then Lord of the Rings came out, and I became obsessed with Tolkien. It occurred to me that it would be funny to draw what the characters would look like as horses. This was the result:

There was an earlier version too, on paper, but this is the Paintshop Pro version I did when I was learning to make digital art. Some years later, with the help of my wacom tablet, I decided to redo these LOTR-Ponies in a new style, so with Legolas, to make him actually LOOK like movie-Legolas, I gave him Orlando Bloom's eyes and eyebrows:

I did the same thing when I made my character Adelais, who was originally just a "fursona" of myself. I put as much of ME into her as I could, which included giving her my own eyes and eyebrows:

Since then I've developed this style into what it is now, and all the horses I draw are drawn in it, just sometimes they have horse eyes, and sometimes they have human eyes.

...And this is why I get frustrated when people tell me how nice my "Spirit Style" is. I don't draw Spirit Style. I never intended to draw Spirit Style or base my own style on the film. And yet the comparison keeps coming up... :faint: Is it really as simple as eyebrows = Spirit?

I hate that it annoys me so much--I know this is my ego talking, and please forgive me for that. Can't help it. :B

Point of this journal:

So I wonder what you guys think I should do? I myself am thinking of trying to figure out a way of drawing their eyes that feels less like a reference to the film. Something less eyebrow-y, but still allowing me to give them good expressions. Any ideas?

Or am I being too sensitive about it? Me dunno! Help-a me!

I understand completely what you're getting at eyebrows = Spirit. Damn you Dreamworks!
I was sick of getting the whole 'spirit-style' comments with my horses so I have adopted a more realistic method, using natural body language to show emotion/expression. My eyes however remain, shall we say 'cartoony' because real horse eyes are a pain in the butt for me XD
It takes a bit more work but it stops the spirit comments.

I always think, animals show expressions and emotions just fine without eyebrows in the real world. So..yeah.

I like your style! It's creative and cute!

Though unfortunately, yes, to the untrained eye, Eyebrows DO = Spirit xD The thing is, there's only so many things you can do with one kind of animal to portray cartoon semi-realism, and Dreamworks just happened to hit a lot of those things and get recognized for it before artists like you did.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then aren't graphic novels more educational than school books? =P

In general it is a person's right to laugh at a good joke. So why do some people get mad whenever I snicker at Twilight? ^^
:iconsiome:
I love the way you draw horses :\ I never really thought you based your style off the film.
Horses do have different expressions, but there's really no way to draw it without the line of the eye brow to show that.
A lot of intense shading of the skin folds and tiny details around the eye?
hmm...good luck <3

I think eyebrows are perfectly fine, and honestly your style is very unique to you I could spot your style on a picture I had never seen before. I wouldn't worry about it. I get comments that my art is spirit style all the time, and I just brush it off, but if your really want to change draw a thin line like the eyelid, and just make it more noticable then you have now... I don't know it may not work.
:iconmoondragon78:
I really never thought your style ressembled Spirit. Your style is unique I think! :aww::hug:
Just tell those people your art is NO "Spirit style".

Happy Belated Birthday by the way!

I don't think you should do anything about it. My piece of advice for almost any problem: Ignore it. Draw the way you want to, in your own style and it doesn't matter what other people think. Draw for yourself and make your art make you happy, don't go trying to please everyone. Just be yourself : )

I can see the similarities between yours style and spirit but i personally wouldn't compare them. You use thinner lines and more shading and highlights. Yours looks more well arty, then spirit which is more simple for animation.

I think ur style is great! so what if people can't differentiate your style to the spirit style, what is spirit style any way, who cares! haha beside i love using eye brows sometimes, it just gives the picture a little more emotion. So don't worry yur style is ur style stick with it,, don't let some people push u into changing it cause their dumb.

I personally so not think you are being to sensitive about this matter as it is quite insulting when people compare styles of other mass produced artist to one's own style. However, I do not think that there is much to be done. Yes, there is a slight similarity if only because of the eyebrows, but that brings expression and you came to do such without Spirit's help. I think that you should just let your art take its natural course and ignore all the people who compare your art without thinking first. Of course, I realize that's easier said then done, but once you can let go of idiotic comments you can be a lot happier.
